Turkey, 1915. The Avakian brothers have not seen each other for years, and now plan a family reunion. Aram and his wife Armineh prepare the estate for the arrival of Assadour. They ignore the warning signs from Istanbul, where the Young Turks have called for strengthening the homeland. As WWI gains momentum, the family, like other Armenians living in the Ottoman Empire, becomes subject to government persecution. The men are murdered and the women are forcibly deported. Will a love affair with a Turkish officer ensure the women’s safety?
“For some time now we have felt the need to approach with our cinema what must be the darkest tragedy of our times ..., massacres between brother people, between ethnic groups living side by side, here in Serbia, in Kosovo, in lands only a stretch of water separate us from, and in Africa, in Asia...” Through personal, powerful stories expressed with extreme cinematic precision and tremendous empathy for humankind, the Taviani brothers’ filmography has always had strong ideological undercurrents. The Lark Farm makes use of a historical moment to illuminate the complex European reality. As they near the ninth decade of their lives (Vittorio was born in 1929, Paolo in 1931), the Tavianis still know how to create relevant film, capable of touching our hearts and minds.
Turchia, 1915. In una cittadina vive la benestante famiglia armena degli Avakian. Nel giorno in cui vengono colpiti dal lutto per la morte del patriarca anche il generale Arkan, capo della guarnigione turca, и presente alle esequie. И il segno di un rapporto, se non di amicizia, di reciproco rispetto tra le due comunitа. Ma i Giovani Turchi hanno giа pronto un piano per creare la Grande Turchia in cui non ci sarа posto per i ricchi e ‘traditori' Armeni. Nessuna mediazione si rivela possibile. Dalla capitale partono per ogni dove gruppi di militari con l'ordine di uccidere sul posto i maschi (di qualunque etа essi siano) e di deportare le donne e le bambine per poi massacrarle nei pressi di Aleppo. La famiglia Avakian viene smembrata e la giovane e vitale Nunik farа di tutto per salvaguardare la vita delle piщ piccole.
I fratelli Taviani non hanno mai smesso di occuparsi del rapporto tra gli individui e la Storia (anche quando si occupavano di Pirandello). Questa volta lo fanno, adattando liberamente l'omonimo romanzo di Antonia Arslan, occupandosi della ferita ancora aperta dell'eliminazione fisica degli Armeni in Turchia. Il film и destinato a suscitare polemiche e i Taviani ne sono consapevoli. Forse proprio per questo costruiscono una struttura narrativa che possa arrivare al grande pubblico e in cui ai Turchi fanatici fanno da contrappunto loro compatrioti, Arkan in primis, attenti ai valori della convivenza. Con un cast veramente composito ma interessante (pregio e difetto delle coproduzioni come questa) tornano anche a riflettere (come giа avevano fatto in La notte di san Lorenzo e in Good Morning Babilonia) sul potere dell'immagine che al contempo puт essere documento (e quindi occasione di riflessione) o strumento manipolabile per attizzare l'odio. Perdono qualcosa in epicitа (anche se la scena della soppressione del neonato и da brividi) ma continuano con determinazione la loro ricerca nei lati oscuri della Storia che qualcuno (in epoca di negazionismi, Shoah compresa) continua a voler mantenere tali.
